Oh Birmingham, you flavorful charming city. You never cease to amaze us with bountiful plates, taste bud-tantalizing beverages, and the magnificent establishments that host it all. Four Southeastern favorites - Rodney Scott’s, Hero Doughnuts, Domestique Coffee, and Frothy Monkey - have expanded on their already plentiful resumes to bring even more great meals and beverages to the Magic City. Domestique has opened up Dawn Patrol at the old Sweet Jon’s spot next to Little Donkey in Homewood, Frothy Monkey’s first Birmingham location has set up shop in the old Urban Standard location on 2nd Avenue North, and Rodney Scott’s and Hero have added new locations in Trussville on Main Street. Each opening represents exciting moments for both restaurants and residents about town.
Dawn Patrol
Dawn Patrol was the first of the three new city caffeine suppliers to open up shop back in June. This expansion of Domestique Coffee’s already wonderful city takeover follows their brick-and-mortar locations Satellite (the bar side of Saturn that coincidentally often serves Hero Doughnuts) and Panache (in 5 Points South). The newest location is already one of Birmingham’s most unique as it’s located in a bike shop. It somehow makes for the perfect coffee-drinking environment. There is wonderful outdoor space to enjoy and a menu full of great food options as well.
Frothy Monkey
Frothy Monkey has become a Southern coffee, bakery, and dining favorite after nearly two decades of serving the masses from their Tennessee locations. The fantastic team has declared Birmingham the next destination to be blessed by their menu, and officially opened last month next to another city favorite at Yo Mama’s. The Magic City café is an all-day affair, with a spectacular dinner and brunch menu making it easy to be thankful for this new spot to frequent.
Hero Doughnuts Trussville
Hero Doughnuts has come to Trussville! The Birmingham staple is right next to the recently opened Rodney Scott’s to make the town one of the best eating hubs in the greater metro. Doughnuts, burgers, and chicken sandwiches come equally massive as they are delicious. Trussville was truly given a winning hand with the plentiful month of openings that was August of 2022.
Rodney Scott’s Trussville
Rodney Scott’s did the unthinkable when the James Beard-winning BBQ master expanded to Avondale from his South Carolina base in 2019. The restaurant came into a proud barbeque city and won us over so much that they have expanded to three locations in the Magic City. The new Trussville restaurant - which features spacious patios, a full-service bar, and a drive-thru - is a very welcome addition.
It’s a good time to be a food lover in Birmingham. Tuck that napkin in and enjoy the ride, Birmingham.
