In Birmingham, everyone’s got a favorite barbecue spot, a preferred sauce, and a strong opinion about who does it best. But when it comes down to it, these three restaurants consistently rise to the top.
1. Dreamland Bar-B-Que
No Birmingham barbecue list is complete without Dreamland. Founded in Tuscaloosa in 1958, this legendary spot now has a flagship location in Birmingham’s Southside. Dreamland is best known for its hickory-smoked pork ribs—basted in a tangy, vinegar-based sauce and served with slices of white bread for soaking up sauce. Round out your plate with baked beans, potato salad, or their signature banana pudding for the full Southern experience.
2. Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q
Founded in 1985 by father-son duo Jim and Nick Pihakis, Jim ’N Nick’s has grown into a beloved Alabama institution. The original Birmingham location on 11th Avenue South is still going strong, serving up tender pulled pork, brisket, and juicy ribs—all slow-smoked over hickory wood. But what keeps people coming back again and again? The cheese biscuits. Buttery, warm, and slightly sweet, they’ve become as iconic as the meat itself. Add scratch-made sides like collard greens or mac and cheese, and you’ve got a meal worth remembering.
3. SAW’s BBQ
Tucked into a tiny space in Homewood, SAW’s BBQ packs a big punch. Opened in 2009 by the late Mike Wilson, SAW’s has become a local favorite for its no-frills, flavor-forward approach. The pork is smoky, the ribs are sticky and caramelized, and the signature “Pork n’ Greens” over cheese grits is a game-changer. SAW’s now has multiple locations across Birmingham, but the original remains a must-visit for anyone wanting a taste of Alabama-style barbecue done right.
