Birmingham has built a solid reputation as one of our nation’s premiere food cities. The Magic City features established heavy weights like Highlands Bar & Grill and Ovenbird, which are only uplifted by the continuous stream of new restaurants popping up around them each month. But while we celebrate our brick-and-mortar establishments, we must also recognize the incredible taste brought to the city by Birmingham food trucks. There are dozens to choose from, and practically every cuisine choice is covered. Here’s 5 to check out next time you desire a food truck venture.
Urbano Taco-Bar
Nestled alongside the Petrol South gas station on 1st Avenue North in Woodlawn is a true gem of a food truck. Urbano Taco-Bar certainly provides tacos (their fish tacos are particularly well-known), but that is only the tip of this delicious iceberg. Steak sandwiches, wings, nachos, and burrito bowls are all competing for the customer’s attention - and they all deserve the shine. But it’s the fajita quesadillas that takes the claim as the most popular order, and we certainly can’t disagree with such a yummy decision.
Granny’s Fish ‘N Grits
Granny’s Fish ‘N Grits had already built a strong Birmingham following, and this was escalated to a whole new level after celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern visited for his Big Food Truck Tips show on the Food Network. This Magic City food truck is located next to Birmingham Daiquiris on 3rd Avenue North, but rumor has it they will soon be expanding to a second, less mobile, location.
TacoRriendo
Irondale has a few great food truck options, and it would be a shame if we didn’t include one to this list! TacoRriendo is the perfect representative for this friendly city. Located next to the A’s Bakery shopping center in the Sunco parking lot off Crestwood Boulevard, this food truck provides tortas, tacos, burritos, and more. A personal favorite is the mate burger, which comes complete with eggs and bacon in addition to the normal toppings!
Travis Chicago Style Polish Sausage & Bear Burger
Many Birminghamians may remember this food truck for the delicious smells coming from the grill after leaving a show at Saturn or venturing over from Avondale Brewing Company. While concerts haven’t been too possible over the last year, enjoying large quantities of massive food is certainly still an option. The Avondale spot isn’t the only location as a second Travis food truck also frequents Roebuck and surrounding areas. Follow their Facebook page for location updates.
Taco Morro Loco
This delicious Birmingham fixture has built a cult following around it’s brick-and-mortar establishment in Avondale, as well as their newer location in Titusville - but their food truck provides the same great flavors to the Crestwood area! Located across the road from Cahaba Brewing, we’d recommend stopping by the food truck anytime you’re in the mood for some tasty tacos or tortas.
Support Local
Supporting local businesses is more crucial than ever in these trying times, and there are plenty of wonderful food trucks to choose from. Whatever you choose is the right choice and helps an entrepreneurial spirit keep on providing great meals for the city! Keep munching, Birmingham.
