Who They Support
The Mike Slive Foundation empowers men and their families to confront prostate cancer head-on. The organization focuses on education about the importance of early detection while funding innovative research to improve treatments and uncover a cure for this disease.
The Challenge
Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men—the same rate as breast cancer in women. However, the risks are even greater for African American men, who are twice as likely to be diagnosed with and die from the disease. Family history also plays a significant role: men with a direct relative diagnosed with prostate cancer face double the risk.
Early detection is crucial, and prostate cancer is one of the few cancers that can be screened through a simple PSA blood test. The Mike Slive Foundation works tirelessly to educate men and their families about understanding a man’s risk for prostate cancer and knowing when it is time to begin regular screenings.
Inspiration
The Mike Slive Foundation is a national leader in the fight to eradicate prostate cancer through public awareness and research funding in memory of Mike Slive, former SEC Commissioner, and a transformative leader whose vision and direction revolutionized college sports.
Commissioner Slive and local attorney Ed Meyerson co-founded the Mike Slive Foundation in hopes that through research and education, we will not lose any more fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, partners, and friends to prostate cancer.
Achievement
The Mike Slive Foundation, while relatively young, in only its seventh year, has already achieved remarkable progress. To date, it has funded 33 prostate cancer research grants and raised over $4.5 million to help eradicate prostate cancer. The foundation has also developed local and national programming to educate men about the importance of early detection, as well as provided free PSA blood test screening at sporting and other community events.
