Parenting three young and very active kids, and working full time means my life is super busy.
But, integrating a consistent exercise routine with mental wellness practices, it’s possible to create a holistic lifestyle that supports both my body and mind.
EXERCISE
I make it a priority to go to the gym five days a week, without exception, focusing on strength training. I work each muscle group twice a week and aim to lift heavy. Variety is key, so I mix up my workouts to keep them fresh and challenging. This not only keeps me physically engaged but helps prevent gym fatigue and plateaus.
But the gym is more than just the place I go to take care of my body—it’s where I can get a mental escape. Exercise releases endorphins, which can reduce stress and elevate my mood.
Another important aspect of my gym time is the opportunity it gives me to model healthy habits for my kids. By demonstrating dedication to my fitness goals, I teach them the value of consistency, self-discipline, and following through on commitments.
BEING ORGANIZED
Organizing my gym schedule has a domino effect on the rest of my life. By prioritizing exercise, I am better able to manage my time and reduce stress. Stress is inevitable, but being organized can help reduce its effects. By having a structured plan for my workouts, I’m better equipped to handle the rest of my day with a clear head.
ME TIME
I also make it a point to wake up an hour before my kids. This quiet time allows me to focus on myself before the demands of the day. I start with a daily Bible study, which centers my thoughts and calms my mind. This alone time refocuses and calms my mind for the coming chaotic day. In the evenings, I don’t deprive myself. If I want to enjoy a glass of wine to help me relax after a crazy day, I do it. While moderation is key, this small indulgence can help me unwind and decompress. With kids, food can sometimes feel like another source of stress, so I don’t overthink it. I focus on moderation and sensible meals. Having to plan for a family means, I stick to balanced meals that work for everyone.
GIVING BACK
Teaching art for kids at LifeTime adds an extra layer of fulfillment to my life. By working with children, I’m reminded that life isn’t just about my own goals or schedule. Helping them explore their creativity puts things into perspective and allows me to give back in a meaningful way.
Balancing physical health with mental wellness isn’t just about one aspect of life. It’s about integrating exercise, mindfulness, and meaningful connections to create a more harmonious lifestyle.
