It’s an especially great week for events in Birmingham, with the World Games coming into town to join an already incredible few days of live music and entertainment. Wrestling events, sing-alongs, and more are all competing for our attention this week and Birminghamians need a guide to help them find the best event for their tasting. Fortunately, About Town Magazine is here to help. Here are a few of our favorite events over the next few weeks.

World Games 2022 Opening Ceremony (Thursday)

The World Games have made their arrival, with tonight’s Opening Ceremony marking the beginning of 10 days of nonstop entertainment. The first night will be a tough one to beat with music legends like Nelly, Shelia E., and Tony! Toni! Tone! joining the planet’s top athletes and Birmingham creatives to make for a great event.

Grease Sing-Along at Alabama Theatre (Friday)

The 2022 Summer Film Series at Alabama Theatre is full of classic movies that are fun for the whole family, but what can beat a sing-along? That ultimate entertainment experience becomes a reality this Friday as the historic venue plays Grease, complete with the famous Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. This event begins at 7pm and is $10 to attend.

Sharrif Simmons at East Village Arts (Friday)

Sharrif Simmons is a poet who has found fans all around the world by speaking his truth from Harlem, New York. His Grandaunt was the founder of Liberation Bookstore, where Sharrif was also a worker and soon a writer. Simmons soon became a staple of New York’s cultural renaissance while making his impact felt in cities like Birmingham where he was instrumental in the creation of the ArtPlay program at UAB. Sharrif will be reading some new literature in the Magic City this Friday at East Village Arts of Birmingham beginning at 6:30pm, and this is something we’d recommend everyone check out.

New South Pro Wrestling presents BirmingSLAM 2 (Friday)

The last time New South Pro Wrestling came to Birmingham titles were taken as bodies were smacked to the stage. There is bound to be more drama this Friday as the company returns to the Magic City for BirmingSLAM 2: Electric Boogaloo which will feature wrestling favorites like Kenzie Paige, Dillon McQueen, “Action” Mike Jackson, and Steven Michaels. This is one fun event that everyone should see.

Lupe Fiasco at World Games Plaza (Saturday)

As we’ve covered in recent articles, Birmingham is bringing a seriously impressive roster when it comes to the World Games music schedule. One of the biggest highlights is Lupe Fiasco, who has been impressed with his lyrics and message for years through hip-hop. He will be playing a free show at the World Games Plaza on Saturday, which sounds like too good of a deal to pass up. 

Metal Night at True Story Brewing Company (Saturday)

Art By Burx is bringing another one of their Magic City famous monthly music nights to True Story Brewing this Saturday. Metal Night happens on the second Saturday of each month, and this one is sure to be a thrill. Coagulated, Crown The Sinner, Depth of Jewels, Blood and Brutality, and Spirit Guardian are all playing loud sets that are sure to keep metal fans in a great mood all night long.

It’s going to be a fun weekend full of diverse events and unique shindigs in the Magic City. All that matters is you get out and have some fun!
