A Model’s Guide: The Only Skincare Products You Need

One thing I learned during my seven years in the modeling industry is the art of underdoing. In the 2010s, our beauty culture hit a peak of overdoing. Makeup looks were marked by deep, dark eyeliner and shimmering lids. The eyelash extensions got thicker. The previously perfect pouts became poised to pop. Since then, we have taken detours, but have more or less arrived at the age-old standard of natural beauty (however different our new version of natural may be from nature’s).

I have been loving the renaissance of reduction—of lips, eyelashes, extensions, etc. as it points to something I learned long ago by spending time with some of the South’s best makeup artists. Less is more. And it always has been. The focus has fallen back on what was underneath the mask of makeup all this time—real, flawed, fickle skin. Here is a model’s guide to flawless skin based on that simple philosophy.

The Less is More Skincare Routine

First, you must find out what your skin type is. This will guide all of your decisions when it comes to product selection. A simple way to determine skin type is to cleanse your face with a light cleanser and wait for half an hour or so. Is your skin tight? You may need more moisture. Is your skin leaning oily? You may need to be mindful of excessive skincare. Somewhere in between? Everything in moderation.

Step 1: Cleanser

A trustworthy cleanser is essential. While it may take trial and error, avoid any cleansers that make unrealistic claims. The purpose of a cleanser is to cleanse the skin, not transform it. Cleansers only stay on the skin for a short time, which makes any claims of overnight transformation unlikely.

My Pick: Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser

La Roche Posay is a godsend for those who want a reliable, accessible, all-around effective cleanser. The fact that it is a French pharmacy brand is always a bonus.

Step 2: Exfoliant

This is where things get tricky. When I say the word exfoliant, it brings to mind visions of scrubs, harsh rubbing, and redness. A good exfoliant should steer clear of all three of these things. For this reason, my preference will always be a chemical exfoliant like BHA.

My Pick: Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

This exfoliating toner is everything. The BHA (salicylic acid) unclogs pores and helps with cell turnover. This leaves you with clearer, calmer skin when used a few times per week.

Step 3: Moisturizer

Here’s my take on moisturizer: make it count or ditch it quickly. In my experience, I have found far too many moisturizers that seem to do little to nothing. With normal to dry skin, I can instantly tell when I have wasted my money on some should-be holy grail. Ultimately, the perfect moisturizer is something you have to find on your own, but I have always found luck in unexpected places.

My Pick: DIME The Glaze

Oddly enough, the one product I’ve used that has left me stunned with how supple my skin felt afterward is this body oil by DIME. If you are sick of seeing your skincare routine seemingly fall apart at this step, try it out. If it’s not a fit, it makes for fabulous full-body moisture.

Bonus: Pamper

As with anything in life, I find a little extra attention being placed toward something seems to yield exceptional results. Follow this principle with your skin as well. Find you perfect three-step simple, streamlined routine, but always have something special lined up to enjoy on selfcare days.

My Pick: Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum

Another French find for my French product obsession back in the day is this serum by Caudalie that is an undeniable one of one. I once had discoloration and dark spots across certain portoins of my face and this serum resolved them gently and beautifully. A must-try splurge.
