Looking to enhance the curb appeal of your home? Ask these four questions.

1) What is your home’s architectural style?

Do you live in a modern or traditional style home? Is it Georgian, Colonial, Greek Orthodox, English Tudor, Craftsman, English Cottage, or something else? If you’re unsure, and your architect friend isn’t around, a quick Google search will guide you in the right direction.

2) Does your current landscape design complement your structure?

Now that you’ve determined the structural style of your home, it’s easier to enhance what you have. Think about size, line, shape, material, and color. Do they complement or clash?

Your landscape design should act as a complement to your home. For instance, a modern landscape design style would suit a contemporary home, while a rustic design with flower beds or hedges would be ideal for a colonial-style home.

The size of your property is also a factor to consider. Smaller properties benefit from minimalist designs that maximize space and promote an open feel. Larger properties can support elaborate luxurious designs.

In regards to line and shape, the continuation and/or contrast will highlight architectural elements. Color is also important. Some materials stay green all year and complement a white home very well.  Blue and purple flowers complement a gray home while white flowers contrast well against a red brick home.

3) How much maintenance does your landscape design require?

Upkeep obligations vary. It’s important to figure out what works for you. Minimalist options ease your burden and complex traditional designs may require additional maintenance.

Lifestyle and usage needs are essential when choosing landscape design styles. How will you use your outdoor space? For example, a family with children may want a play area while a homeowner who often entertains may want a patio, outdoor kitchen, or pool.

4) Do you need a landscape designer?

Depending on your budget, existing landscaping, and projected scope of needs; you may want to consider hiring a landscape designer whose education and experience will ensure a seamless process and professional results.
