About Town took on the very arduous, grueling task of trying to find the best veggie burger in town (sarcasm – it was great fun). The verdict? We simply can’t choose just one we love. Here are 10 veggie burger options around Birmingham that will make your mouth water. (Note that these are vegetarian burgers unless specifically noted that they are vegan.)

Char Bar No. 7

At this spot in Mountain Brook, you can nosh on Chef’s Black Bean Burger – a handmade black bean patty, smoked tomato aioli, lettuce, tomato, and onion, served on a wheat bun – for just $11.99.

Rojo

Rojo packs a punch with its American fare right alongside its Latin fare. And on its American menu you can find both a vegetarian and a vegan burger to satisfy your cravings. The vegetarian option is called the Garden Burger and features jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles for $8.75; the vegan Beyond Burger is a plant-based burger that Rojo’s menu says tastes like real meat. It’s soy and gluten free and served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles for $11.75.

MOOYAH Burgers, Fries, & Shakes

Birmingham is home to two MOOYAH locations – downtown and at the Colonnade – and the chain gives customers the option to build their own burger. Vegetarians and vegans can opt for the Black Bean Vegan as their protein and go on to build their perfect burger from there. (Prices vary based on choices.) If you want to take the guesswork and decision-making out of your burger experience, go for The Vegan, which has Dr. Praeger’s Black Bean Vegan, sliced avocado, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and barbeque sauce on a potato bun.

The Standard

Located in the Pizitz Food Hall downtown you’ll find an $8 black bean veggie burger with lettuce, tomato, avocado, chipotle mayo, and white cheddar – one of the best in town.

Baha Burger

Also worth checking out is the Portabella Mushroom Veggie at Baha Burger, which has two locations in town – in Hoover and in Vestavia Hills. It’s a portobello topped with grilled onions, red peppers, Swiss, arugula, tomato, and chipotle aioli, served on a wheat bun. It’ll only set you back $6.49.

Al’s Deli & Grill

A favorite of UAB students, faculty, and staff alike, this downtown institution serves up a great veggie burger for just $5.95, seasoned to perfection and topped with sauteed onions.

Twisted Root Burger Co.

The Vegabond at this Vestavia Hills eatery is a must try. It features a house made chickpea, black bean, brown rice, and quinoa burger (!) with sliced avocado and sriracha on wheat bread. Prepare to leave impressed.

Back Forty Beer Company

In addition to the obviously killer beer selection, Back Forty – located at Sloss Docks – also brings the heat with its B40 Impossible Burger, which it serves with chips, sub fries, or a salad (also making it 100% Vegan)for no charge. The burger is made up of 6 oz Impossible Burger, Violife cheddar cheese, aioli made with Zero Egg (which is a plant based egg), house dill pickles, and onions for $14.

Carrigan’s Public House

In addition to being one of the coolest places in town to hang out, Carrigan’s caters to the vegetarians among us in not one but two exciting ways. First, its Veggie Beyond Burger, which has cheddar or ghost pepper jack cheese, sticky onions, lettuce, tomato, Wickles, and garlic aioli for $15.95. And we know you came here for the veggie burger content, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention that Carrigan’s offers a Veggie Beyond Corn Dog for $14.95 – a street-style corn dog with hipster ranch, guajillo ketchup (read: delicious), cotija cheese, and cilantro. Yes, please.

Fleming’s

When most think of Fleming’s, they think of steak, but, lo and behold, they have a solid veggie option, too. Check out the Chickpea and Eggplant Croquette, featuring a house made chickpea and roasted eggplant veggie patty, roasted cauliflower steak, arugula, Campari tomatoes, and romesco sauce for $32.
