Where to Go in Birmingham When It’s Too Hot to Be Outside

July 17, 2026

At some point every July, Birmingham stops being charming and starts being genuinely brutal. The humidity settles in, the asphalt shimmers, and the idea of being outside for more than the walk from your car becomes laughable. This is that week.

The good news is that Birmingham has more than enough going on inside to keep you busy, entertained, and comfortably air conditioned until things cool back down. Here’s where to go.

Birmingham Museum of Art

Free admission, world-class collection, and gloriously air conditioned — the Birmingham Museum of Art is one of the most underutilized escapes in the city. With over 24,000 works spanning American, European, Asian, African, and contemporary art, you could spend an entire afternoon here and still not see everything. It’s also a genuinely beautiful building. Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday until 8 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

McWane Science Center

Don’t let the “science center” label fool you — McWane is a great afternoon for adults and kids alike. The IMAX dome theater alone is worth the trip, and the aquarium with over 50 species of marine life is one of Birmingham’s best-kept secrets. Located downtown, it’s an easy stop to pair with lunch or dinner in the area.

Sidewalk Film Center

If you haven’t been to Sidewalk yet, this is your excuse. Birmingham’s independent film hub screens everything from art house features to locally made films, and the rotating schedule means there’s almost always something worth seeing. They also host trivia nights and filmmaker events — worth checking their calendar before you go.

Saturn

Saturn in Avondale is one of those rare places that works for nearly any occasion. Concert venue, coffee shop, and arcade bar all under one roof — on a hot afternoon it’s a perfectly valid plan to park yourself there, order a coffee or a beer, and spend a couple of hours on vintage arcade games. Relaxed, cool, and reliably interesting.

K1 Speed

If you want something with a little more adrenaline, K1 Speed’s 45,000-square-foot air conditioned facility has a Grand Prix-style race track and F1-inspired go-karts. It’s genuinely fun for adults — not just a kids’ birthday party spot — and a solid option when you want an activity rather than just somewhere to sit.

The Golffice

Indoor golf simulation has arrived in Birmingham and it’s exactly as good as it sounds. The Golffice offers simulator bays for everything from a quick practice session to a full round on a virtual course, and it’s been popular enough to expand to multiple locations across the metro including Vestavia Hills and Trussville. Book in advance — it fills up.

Alabama Theatre

One of Birmingham’s true architectural gems, the Alabama Theatre is a beautifully restored 1927 movie palace that hosts films, concerts, and live performances throughout the year. Check their schedule — a classic film on a hot afternoon in that stunning interior is one of Birmingham’s best experiences.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

A must-visit at least once and worth revisiting. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute offers one of the most important and moving museum experiences in the Southeast, with exhibits chronicling the 1963 Birmingham campaign and the broader Civil Rights Movement. Block off a full afternoon — there’s a lot here, and it deserves your time.

Escape Rooms

Birmingham has a solid escape room scene for when you want something interactive and competitive. The Escape Game Birmingham downtown is consistently well-reviewed and offers multiple themed rooms at varying difficulty levels. Great for groups, date nights, or anyone who needs a reason to problem-solve indoors for an hour.

Just Stay at the Bar

Sometimes the most honest answer is the right one. Birmingham’s indoor bar scene — Juniper, Vino, House of Found Objects, Golden Age Wine Garden — offers perfectly acceptable shelter from the elements with the added benefit of excellent drinks. There are worse ways to wait out the heat.

Birmingham summers are relentless, but the city gives you plenty of ways to stay sane until October rolls around. When in doubt, find air conditioning and good company — the rest takes care of itself.
