Birmingham was named the Magic City due to our rapid industrial growth, but there is no denying the majestic moments that are only possible due to the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are located right in the middle of Alabama the Beautiful after all, and there are plenty of fantastic sites to take in. Scenic city streets join pleasant parks in making for an enjoyable biking experience through Birmingham, and there are many great locations to check out. Here are a few of our favorites.

Shades Creek Greenway

Alongside Lakeshore Drive across the road from Samford is one of the most pleasant bike riding trails you’ll find in the Magic City. The Homewood Shades Creek Greenway (also known as Lakeshore Trail) travels alongside a bubbling creek and features all sorts of wonderful green spaces and wildlife. It’s a very popular destination for active Greater Bham residents.

Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park has every type of path a biking-lover could desire. Mountain biking trails at various degrees of difficulty join BMX and road biking opportunities galore. This writer may have slid about 10 feet on their chin at the BMX trail the summer before 6th grade, but I’d still highly recommend a day at this beautiful state park.

Rotary Trail

The Rotary Trail is the ultimate Birmingham bike riding experience. The impressive stretch of scenic trail can take you all the way from Railroad Park through Avondale and all the way to East Lake Park. The gigantic sign on the Parkside District end of town is a great place to take a snapshot of our beautiful biking city.

Vulcan Trail

Vulcan Trail offers all the highlights of a great Birmingham bike ride. Smooth trailing next to a chiseled city landmark and a magnificent hilltop view ensure that the experience will be a fun one. This is a great way to fall in love with your hometown all over again (and perhaps break a little sweat while doing so).

Wherever you end up biking, the important part is you stay safe and take in the unique treasures that are Magic City views.
