El Royale

The concept leans into an elevated, cocktail-forward Mexican dining experience with a menu that rewards curiosity. Salud
Downtown on 2nd Avenue North, steps from Bayonet and the city’s best new dining corridor, Salud brings authentic Mexican cuisine to a beautifully restored historic building. The beverage program was crafted by James Beard-nominated José Medina Camacho, which tells you everything you need to know about the level of care here. Open late and lively — one of the best spots downtown for a group dinner that spills into a night out.
Taco Mama
Taco Mama is Birmingham’s hometown success story — born here, beloved here, and now with locations across the South. The margaritas are consistently ranked among the city’s best, the queso is the stuff of local legend, and the casual sidewalk patio vibe at the Crestline location is exactly what you want on a warm evening. It also took the top spot for Best Takeout and Best Catering in the Reader’s Poll — no small feat.
Adios
A solid happy hour and a strong margarita program have earned Adios a loyal following in the Over the Mountain area. The vibe is festive and social, the food is reliable, and it’s the kind of place that works for a girls’ night as easily as a family dinner. The third-place finish for Best Margarita in the Reader’s Poll is well-earned.
Mayawell Bar
Mayawell’s colorful outdoor terrace in Vestavia Hills has become a go-to for tequila-forward cocktails and casual Mexican bites. The hummingbird queso and al pastor tacos are the move. It gets lively on weekends — go early or lean into the energy. A great option when you want something fun and neighborhood-friendly without the downtown drive.
Mexico Lindo
A Birmingham institution that has been doing it right for years. Mexico Lindo is the kind of place that earns loyalty through consistency — reliable, unpretentious, and the type of neighborhood Mexican restaurant that people have very strong opinions about in the best possible way. A fixture in the Reader’s Poll year after year.
Habaneros Mexican Grill
Known for its authenticity and generous portions, Habaneros is a strong option for anyone who wants something closer to traditional Mexican home cooking than the elevated cantina experience. Solid across the board, priced right, and consistently well-reviewed by Birmingham diners who know what they’re looking for.
De Nada
A newer addition to the Birmingham Mexican scene with a casual, approachable concept built around tacos, drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. De Nada has found its footing quickly and developed a following among younger Birmingham diners looking for something with a little more personality than a chain and a little less formality than a full sit-down.
