Birmingham’s food scene has never been more exciting — and 2026 has already brought a wave of new openings worth getting to before everyone else does. Whether you’re looking for a special night out, a new happy hour spot, or just something different from your usual rotation, here’s where to go right now.

Bayonet

If you haven’t been yet, this is the one to prioritize. Chef Rob McDaniel — a James Beard semifinalist — and his wife Emily opened this seafood restaurant and raw bar on 2nd Avenue North, right next door to their beloved Helen. The seasonal menu runs the full range from fresh Gulf Coast oysters to tuna steak, and it earned a spot on the New York Times’ list of the 50 best restaurants in America in 2025. Birmingham fine dining at its absolute best.

Johin’na

Downtown’s most interesting new opening may be Johin’na, which blends Japanese technique with Southern ingredients in a setting that’s as impressive as the food. Hot Stone Short Ribs, Grilled Oysters with Miso Butter, sushi and robata-grilled dishes — it’s the kind of menu that rewards the adventurous diner. Perfect for a date night or a dinner that feels like a genuine occasion.

Rêve

For a truly special evening, Rêve is the new fine dining destination worth knowing about. Chef Jacob M. Stull brings French-Canadian heritage to a tasting menu that draws on Southern traditions of bread baking, pickling, and preserving. This is a slow, savored dinner — not a quick weeknight bite — and it’s exactly the kind of restaurant Birmingham’s culinary scene has been ready for.

Epice

Epice brought authentic Lebanese cuisine to Rotary Trail, and it’s been a welcome addition to Birmingham’s dining landscape. Mezze plates, spiced meats, and fresh vegetables form a menu rooted in Mediterranean hospitality. It’s a beautiful spot for a long, leisurely lunch or an early dinner with friends who like to share.

Wooden City

Morris Avenue’s newest addition is a solid option for when you want something relaxed but still interesting. Wood-fired pizzas, a Spicy Lamb Rigatoni that people keep talking about, braised brisket, good cocktails — Wooden City has the kind of menu that works whether you’re dressed up or coming straight from work. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming without being precious about it.

Salud Taqueria

Steps from Bayonet on 2nd Avenue North, Salud brings authentic Mexican cuisine to a beautifully restored historic downtown building. The beverage program was crafted by James Beard-nominated José Medina Camacho, which tells you something about the level of care here. Open late, lively, and quickly becoming one of the best spots downtown for a night out with a group.

Golden Age Wine Garden

Not a restaurant in the traditional sense, but absolutely worth including. Golden Age Wine Garden downtown is a relaxed, elegant spot for wine and small bites, and its location near Bayonet and Salud makes it an easy first or last stop on a progressive evening along 2nd Avenue North. A strong wine list, a light food menu, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely civilized.

Birmingham’s dining scene is moving fast right now, and the best way to keep up is to stay in the loop.
