One of the most fun holidays to celebrate is upon us, and Birmingham is sure to make other cities green with envy by our plans for the day! The annual celebration of Ireland’s premiere saint is actually the Most Global National Holiday in the entire planet, so give a toast to world unity while drinking green beer with friends this afternoon. Here’s a few of our favorite things to check out in the Magic City today and throughout the weekend to celebrate the holiday.

Annual 5 Points South St. Patrick’s Day Celebration (Mar. 12 - Mar. 19)

If you want to experience a true Birmingham St. Patrick’s Day, you must attend one of the many celebrations found in 5 Points South throughout the week. The neighborhood and the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society are two of the primary forces involved with putting together this impressive slate of events, which began with an Irish Dinner at the Inverness Country Club last weekend–with proceeds going towards Kid One Transport. There will be a raising of the Irish flag in 5 Points at 5:30pm on Wednesday, March 16th, followed by what organizers hope to be Birmigham’s largest St. Patrick’s toast of Guinness pints and Tullamore Dew shots. St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated by venues across the neighborhood on March 17th, and the famous parade takes place on Saturday the 19th.

Restaurants and bars throughout the historical neighborhood are joining in the festivities with fun menus all week long. 5 Points Public House Oyster Bar has a particularly festive menu, and is joined by city favorites like Black Market, Unplugged, Iron City Pizza Co., and Sleek. The good people at Dave’s Pub will have a steady stream of concerts and other fun events planned all week to celebrate as well.

Danny Winters’ St. Patty’s Day Lot Party at Marty’s GM (Mar. 19)

The Irondale location of the famed Birmingham establishment is going all out to celebrate this year along with Danny Winter. Plans include a Guinness beer truck, live music, plenty of festivities, and a menu featuring fish and chips, house corned beef, cabbage, and cottage pie all adding to the merriment of the occasion. Tickets are $5 until 4, and $10 after. There’s also a VIP Tullamore Dew section and a Jameson Irish Whiskey bar to help add to the fun.

St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser at Little London (Mar. 17)

The good people at Little London will be hosting quite the fun fundraiser for Homewood High School seniors with the Bill Crawford Educational Foundation of the Homewood Rotary Club! The pub’s delicious food and beverages will be joined by live traditional music from Scotland and Ireland played by Hooley, along with a very impressive list of auction items including a trip to Ireland, football tickets, and beach/lake house rentals. These are some of the Magic City’s most fun restaurant owners, and we’d recommend y’all show them some support!

St. Patty’s Day, but Make it Avondale

Avondale Brewing has quite the Thursday planned, beginning at 4pm. DJ Mark A.D. will be bringing the tunes, while Red Mountain Crawfish Company will be bringing delicious food to go perfectly with the wonderful brews found at this Birmingham-favorite establishment.

Wherever you end up celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, it’s nice to know our city provides so many places to enjoy life’s occasions together. These are only a few of the many great locations to meet new friends and enjoy time well-spent with old ones. I’ll cheers a green beer to that.
