The Birmingham Stallions impressive 2022 season ended with the team winning the first-ever USFL championship trophy. The matchup between the league’s winningest team (our hometown heroes) against the Philadelphia Stars closes off a successful first year for the league, our team, the new Protective Stadium, and a buzzing Uptown District. Rumor has it that the Stallions’ weekly trips to Yo Mama’s are part of the reason behind the team’s success, but there is no doubt that the Magic City’s favorite football team was the best on the field throughout the entire year.
The Stallions were favored in their matchup against the Stars, but the game was far from a guaranteed victory. Both teams played their best all four quarters, but Birmingham sealed the victory late with 16 seconds left in the game after an interception by Christian McFarland. The entire game proved to have more fireworks than a 4th of July show. A touchdown pass from Alex McGough to Victor Bolden Jr. and a pick-six from Scooby Wright were other fourth-quarter highlights that ended with the Stallions smoking victory cigars in the end zone.
Birmingham had the longest odds of winning the championship at the beginning of the season, but never let the doubters block their success as they went on to an impressive 9-1 regular-season record. Stallions games became a weekend tradition for many in the Magic City, and although we were sad to see the team leave for Ohio we knew they were preparing to come back with a trophy in tow. Although the USFL banners may have been replaced by World Games displays at the Sheraton hotel, this season, this team, and this league will be appreciated by Birmingham residents for many years to come.
