So Long, Summer: The Birmingham Send-Off Before the Season Ends

Summer in Birmingham has a funny way of ending. There is no dramatic closing ceremony. One minute you’re complaining about the heat, and the next you’re reaching for a jacket at dinner and realizing September is practically here.

Before we completely trade long evenings for football Saturdays and fall calendars, there are a few things worth doing one more time.

Go to Sidewalk, Even If You’re Not a Film Person

The Sidewalk Film Festival runs August 24 through 30 in Birmingham’s historic Theatre District, bringing independent films, filmmakers and a very specific kind of downtown energy to the city. This year’s festival includes more than 200 films, plus parties, panels and other events throughout the weekend.

You don’t need to spend the entire weekend watching movies. Pick a film, wander downtown, grab dinner and see where the evening goes. That’s part of the Sidewalk experience.

Make One More Saturday Morning at Pepper Place

The Market at Pepper Place runs every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, and August 29 includes a chef demonstration from Tarez’s Kitchen along with live music from Oxy Morons and Grover Sheffield.

It’s one of those Birmingham rituals that works especially well at the end of summer. Get there early, walk the market before the heat arrives, buy something you absolutely did not need and get home before the afternoon becomes a weather event.

Spend One More Evening Outside

This is not the time to overthink it. Pick a patio you like, order something cold and stay until the sky changes color.

About Town readers already gave The Garage the top spot for Best Patio / Outdoor Seating in the 2026 Reader’s Poll, followed by Back Forty, Bottega, OvenBird and Vino.

Fall patio weather is coming, but there’s no reason to wait for it.

Stop by Railroad Park

Railroad Park’s Magic City Pop-Up Plaza returns Friday, August 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. with Birmingham food trucks and local vendors, followed by the park’s regular Saturday programming.

It’s an easy excuse to get downtown, walk around, grab something to eat and spend a little time outside before our calendars fill up with fall activities.

Take One Last Pool Day

If you still have a swimsuit in regular rotation, use it. Homewood’s Patriot Pool is open Saturday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with additional pool hours continuing through Labor Day weekend.

This is your official permission to spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing productive.

Have the Dinner That Feels Like Summer

You know the one. Something grilled. Something cold. Maybe a tomato situation that would be completely unnecessary in January. Maybe dinner outside. Maybe dinner that turns into drinks somewhere else.

Summer food doesn’t need a seasonally themed menu to announce itself. Sometimes you just know.

Stay Out a Little Too Late

Fall has plenty going for it, but summer still owns the long evening. Take advantage of one more night when nobody is checking the clock because it gets dark too early.

Go hear live music. Meet friends for a drink. Walk around somewhere you usually drive through. Let dinner become dessert become one more round.

Then Let Fall Happen

We’re not saying goodbye to summer with a dramatic farewell. Birmingham doesn’t really do things that way.

We’re just making sure we used it.

September will bring football, cooler evenings, new restaurant plans, art, music and plenty of reasons to get back out there. But for one more weekend, there’s still time for summer.
