Closing the Gap
A conversation with Dr. Mark Yanosky, Board Certified Orthodontist
Seems like kids are getting braces at younger ages than ever before. What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?
We find that the kids that get the best results have been followed from a younger age- say 7 and older. The VAST majority of the time, no actual treatment is needed until most or all of the baby teeth have fallen out around age 12 on average. For some, early intervention is necessary to avoid or limit more challenging treatment in the future.
I know many adults who are also being treated these days .... are you seeing this in your practice?
Yes- The fastest segment of growth in the orthodontic market seems to be adult treatment. We are now literally seeing patients as young as elementary school all the way up to patients in their 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s! Clear aligner treatment has really done a nice job of giving patients an option where they don’t want traditional or even “clear” braces glued to their teeth.
*What do you enjoy most about your practice? *
The people .... plain and simple. We have a great team that I’m proud of. It’s also a blast to take care of so many patients of different backgrounds and ages. We are honored to care for so many of them. Also the community- we pride ourselves on giving back to the community in every way possible. Dr. Yanosky graduated form UAB dental school in 1999, receiving numerous awards including the Dean’s Medal, the school’s highest honor. After finishing orthodontic specialty training, Dr. Yanosky entered private practice and has lectured nationally and internationally on several different topics in orthodontics, Since 2010 he has served as an adjunct assistant professor of orthodontics at UAB. His spare time is devoted to staying active with his wife and three kids.
