Downtown Birmingham just got its first ice cream store and it may just give the big dogs in town a run for their money. This new competitor that is taking the scene is Lichita’s. Now this isn’t your usual rocky road, superman ice cream or orange sherbet type of place. Lichita’s is an authentic heladería and paletería. For those non-Spanish speakers out there this means a store that sells ice cream and popsicles. Eloy Garcia, the owner of Lichita’s is from Southern Mexico. The ice cream and popsicles he sells at his store are inspired by the frozen treats he grew up eating. This is exactly why Lichita’s stands out from the crowd. Many of the flavors use fruits that are native to Mexico and Central America. This includes mamey, guava and soursop. There are also unique creamy flavors such as burnt milk (caramel), rice and queso. However Lichita’s also makes the classics and boy, do they make them right. Cookies and cream, chocolate, pistachio, even rompope (egg nog). The fresh fruit and locally sourced ingredients really set Lichita’s over the top. The ice cream is light, creamy and almost fluffy. It is not overly sugary, letting the flavor speak for itself. The staff is very warm and friendly and will stop at nothing to find the exact flavor you are craving. It’s safe to say Lichita’s has stolen our hearts and is definitely worth visiting!
